MORMON BAPTISM. living could be baptized for, and thus save their dead friends—which baptism must be performed in the temple; no other place would give it the requisite efficacy. The Mormon divinity, however, was becoming impatient at the various delays in constructing a residence for him on this mundane sphere, and, to stimulate and encourage his followers, he concluded to revise this doctrine, to suit the emergencies of the period, in the following terms:

"But I command you all, ye my saints, to build a house unto me; and I grant unto you a sufficient time to build a house unto me, and during this time your
