Unpainted (oc with light coat of paint) forecastle deck had low Geiger readings because of its excellent drainage: heavily painted maindeckandfantailwithcompacable drainage had readings double or three times that of forecastle (Reference 4). As part of the survey unit. its mission included surveying the probable effects of the nuclear tests on fish and other wildlife and conducting an oceanographic survey to determine the character of the ocean currents in and around Bikini Atoll.
