605:1[edit]Regarding the custom of performing kapparah before Yom Kippur by slaughtering a rooster for each male and saying verses over it, we should prevent the custom. Rem"a: And there are some gaonim that write about this custom, and similarly it is written from many later halakhic authorities, and so is the custom in all these countries, and we should not change it because it is an ancient custom. And it is the custom to take a male rooster for a male and a female for a female (Beit Yosef in the name of Tashbatz). A pregnant woman takes two roosters, for maybe she will have a male. One chooses white roosters based on what it says "If your sins prove to be like crimson, they will become white as snow" [Isaiah 1:18]. It is customary to give the kapparot to the poor or to redeem them for money to give to the poor (Mahari"l). There are places where it is customary to go to the streets and to increase charity, and all of this is a beautiful custom. The slaughtering of kapparot should be done immediately after it is returned and one must place his hands on the kapparah, like was done with the sacrifices. And we throw their intestines on the roof or in the courtyard, where the birds can get them (Tur). |
סעיף א מה שנוהגים לעשות כפרה בערב יום כפורים לשחוט תרנגול על כל בן זכר ולומר עליו פסוקים יש למנוע המנהג: הגה ויש מהגאונים שכתבו מנהג זה וכן כתבו אותו רבים מן האחרונים וכן נוהגין בכל מדינות אלו ואין לשנות כי הוא מנהג ותיקין ונוהגין ליקח תרנגול זכר לזכר ולנקבה לוקחין תרנגולת (ב"י בשם תשב"ץ) ולוקחין למעוברת ב' תרנגולים אולי תלד זכר ובוחרין בתרנגולים לבנים על דרך שנאמר אם יהיו חטאיכם כשנים כשלג ילבינו ונהגו ליתן הכפרות לעניים או לפדותן בממון שנותנים לעניים (מהרי"ל) ויש מקומות שנוהגין לילך על הקברות ולהרבות בצדקה והכל מנהג יפה ויש להסמיך שחיטת הכפרות מיד לאחר שהחזירו עליו וסמך ידיו עליו דמות הקרבן וזורקין בני מעיהם על הגגות או בחצר מקום שהעופות יכולין לקחת משם (טור): |
