A tender noisy troublemaker
With lust for life!
A charming clever chances-taker
Decided I’ve!..

Much tenderer than those before me,
I know no guilt …
Alas for grave, the all-conforming
Bleaching all tint!

To be what no one really cares for
To be like ice!
Oblivious of what there was, or
What will arise ...

Forget would I of heart once broken
And mended fair;
Forget my voice and words once spoken;
My shiny hair ...

The turquoise bracelet, aged and ancient
Around a stalk:
My narrow arm, so thinly fashioned
From pallid chalk …

Remember not the hand uplifting
Sketching a cloud;
And how the pearly pen came flitting
By and around …

My jumping feet across the hedgerow
Forever passed;
My never-lagging running shadow
Down in the dust …

The flaming azure of the morning
I would forget;
My quiet days, my mischief storming;
All poems yet!

My miracle so brightly happened,
By laugh dispelled;
The pinkest ever under heaven
So deadly paled …

They will not open – no, they mustn’t –
But love them do! –
Not for a glance or for a sunset
Nor fields bedewed:

Forever still, my eyes unmoving
– Nor for a bloom! –
My lovely Earth, forgive me truly
For ages doomed!

But moons will ever keep on waning
And wax as snow
But never youth of mine, refraining –
Once it will go.
