ARCHER, JAMES (1551?–1624?), Irish Jesuit, was born at Kilkenny in 1549 or 1551; entered the Society of Jesus at Rome in 1581; was professed of the four vows in Spain; and became the first rector of the Irish college at Salamanca. Father Archer was a great promoter of education, and was very dear to Irishmen, with whom he possessed unbounded influence. He was a famous missioner in Ireland during the war of Tyrone. He died in Spain between 1617 and 1624.
