United States Army officer from 1898 to 1947. He served with the Western Defense Command from December 1939 to June 1943;He commanding officer of the Western Defense Command when the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor. Under Executive Order 9066, Lieutenant General DeWitt issued orders infringing the rights of Japanese-Americans; ordered the evacuation and internment of 120,000 Japanese-Americans.
