CANDLELIGHT

Candlelight

Ah sets mah cannle in de winder-pane
To sen' des a streak down Brambly Lane,
En Ah says: "It's mighty little
Fo' a dark, cole night,
But, mebby dey's somebody 'thout enny light!"

Seem lak a voice keep callin' once mo',
En Ah holes mah rabbit foot, en open de do' . . .
Des ole Hoot-Owl axin' "Who? Who?"'
En Ah sez, "Nobody
'Cep' on'y me en you!"

Ah ain't argufyin' wid a bird lak him,
But shadders is black en de light blows dims . . .
(Cannles at de Big House
Lookin'-glass'n hall,
Ole Miss' sweet face
Smilin' at we-all. . . .)

Shadders leanin' closer, en dat bird axin' "Who?"
Seem lak he know mo'n what Ah think he do,
'Cause, settin' in mah cannlelight,
At de end o' yeah,
Ah ain't feelin' suah Ah is
De onies' one dat's heah.
