A BOTTICELLI DANCING-DRESS, 182 COSTUME CHAP. An easy and popular manner of solving theproblem of what to wear is to reproduce the dresswhich is being worn by the heroine of some veryfavoured play. Veronique, in her pale-green silkand white muslin draperies, was a recent opportunitymuch adopted, and for years no fancy-dress ballwas complete without at least three Kate Hard-castles, while Juliets were to be found in everydoorway, and a dancing Faust would lack nochoice of Margarets. The Calico ball proclaims itself pre-eminentlythrifty in its intention, and remarkably prettyeffects may be obtained with cotton fabrics, ifsufficient intelligence be used in the design of thedresses. To achieve the effect of an old print,white crepe cotton and pale blue sateen, with astraw bonnet banded with the blue and a pinkrose beneath, may be recommended as usefulingredients.
