Text Appearing Before Image:
America and placed in an Indian family at St. R6gis.Williams lived for many years with the Oneidas, and died at anadvanced age. He was described as having been a man ofportly physique, with large features and big hands and feet. His complexion was rather dark. I think it is probable that hewas descended from half-breed Indian parents. It will be observed, that, the whole value of the evidence support-ing the theory of his being the Dauphin, depends upon the accuracy THE DAUPHIN. 53 of the story that he received two visits from the Prince deJoinville. This statement, if correct, appears however to estab-lish the presumption that the Royal Family of France, may havehad some doubts with regard to the truth of the report of thedeath of Louis XVII. in the Temple. It is certain that a boy, said to have been that young prince, was buried by the orders ofthe Commune in an obscure churchyard in the Faubourg St.Antoine, in the year 1795; but the evidence is scarcely con-clusive upon the subject.
Text Appearing After Image:
CHAPTER IV. ANCIENT INDIAN MOUNDS AND EARTHWORKS IN OHIO. Earthworks of the Mound Builders and their geographical posi-tion.—Miamisburgh Mound.—Grave Creek Mound.—Ages andcontents of burial mounds.—Rectangular, circular and octagonalInclosures near Newark.—Marietta Earthworks.—Discoveriesmade in a burial mound.—Fortifications near Portsmouth.—Encampments in the valley of the Scioto. The great earthworks in Ohio are the subject ofmuch antiquarian interest and conjecture. Severalsurveys of them, have been made for the purpose ofascertaining their purpose and the probable period oftheir construction, but nothing definite has yet beendetermined. In considering the various theories respecting themigrations of the aboriginal tribes, it is strange thattraces of the same kind of encampments have notbeen found either in the North-West towards Asia,or in the southern parts of the valley of the Missis-sippi. It is difficult to understand how it happensthat these works only occur
