- I woke up early, when it was just light,
- And everything was very strange and still;
- The wind was blowing, as it blows at night;
- Beyond the trees, the road lay calm and white,
- Where, all day, noisy wagons roll downhill.
- The grass and trees looked very cool and green;
- There were not any shadows there at all:
- The back yard seemed so very still and clean;
- And, on the porch, the tubs and wash-machine
- Were all a-standing dreaming by the wall.
