<poem>

I woke up early, when it was just light,
And everything was very strange and still;
The wind was blowing, as it blows at night;
Beyond the trees, the road lay calm and white,
Where, all day, noisy wagons roll downhill.
The grass and trees looked very cool and green;
There were not any shadows there at all:
The back yard seemed so very still and clean;
And, on the porch, the tubs and wash-machine
Were all a-standing dreaming by the wall.
