Lippincott's Monthly Magazine

One of the major literary periodicals of the nineteenth century, Lippincott's Monthly Magazine contained stories, novels, and poetry by predominantly American authors. In 1890, the magazine devoted itself to publishing British authors resulting in the publication of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sign of the Four and Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Grey. Heavily sponsored by advertisement, a typical issue contained dozens of pages of advertisements, over 100 pages of text, and a humor section called "With the Wits."
