Spiritual Song manuscript (1836)
William Maxwell and Edgar Allan Poe

Maxwell sent this manuscript containing two of his poems to Thomas White, publisher of the Southern Literary Messenger. The manuscript ended up on the desk of Edgar Allan Poe, who was editor of the Messenger at the time. Poe wrote a short poem entitled "Spiritual Song" in the bottom margin of the manuscript, presumably the beginning of a draft of a longer poem which was never completed. The manuscript was discovered in 1908 by James H. Whitty who included "Spiritual Song" in his 1911 collection The Complete Poems of Edgar Allan Poe.
