SENATE BILL NO. 727

AN ACT Authorizing the State Road Department to Renumber Any or All State Roads.

WHEREAS, due to the great numbers of new roads that have been designated state roads, the present policy of assigning a separate number to each newly designated road has been found to be obsolete, confusing, and unduly cumbersome, and

WHEREAS, the renumbering of the state roads would result in greatly reducing the numbers of same, removing confusion because of duplication of state road and U. S. Highway route numbers of different roads and simplifying the numbering of roads on state maps;

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

Section 1. That the State Road Department be and it is hereby authorized to renumber any or all state roads of the connecting system of state roads, including municipal connecting link roads, and in renumbering such roads, to reduce the total numbers of same as far as practicable and follow a systematic plan of renumbering so that so far as possible roads extending in the general direction of East and West, and roads extending in the general direction of North and South shall be given odd and even numbers respectively, and roads forming parts of the U. S. Highway routes shall be given the same State numbers as the U. S. Highway numbers; provided the Department shall not renumber any road wherever the Department considers that such renumbering would result in misdirecting or confusing traffic.

Section 2. As soon as practicable, and within the limitation of funds available to it for such purpose the State Road Department shall erect suitable road signs and markers showing the State highway numbers assigned to each road in the State Maintained System.

Section 3. The renumbering of state roads provided hereunder shall in nowise disturb the preferential status of any road which is renumbered.

Section 4. This Act shall take effect immediately upon becoming law.
