7,200 Lost U.S. Silent Feature Films (1912-29) (2021)
by Stephen C. Leggett

This is a list of just under 7,200 feature silent films noted to be lost in the Library of Congress film database.

Each entry in the list contains the following information in this order:

  • the title of the film (with a hyperlink to the Library of Congress database record)
  • the year the film was released
  • the director of the film
  • occasionally, a short note about the film's preservation

Film titles beginning with "The", "A", or "An" have those words at the end, for example: "Big Drive, The".

  • This compilation is a definite work-in-progress. Updated versions of this list will be posted periodically at this location.
  • Feature film means 4 reels or more in length
  • Each title contains a hypertext link to its entry in our silent film database. There you can find additional information on each title, including studio.
  • In cases where only a fragment from one reel, trailer, outtakes or stills survive, that film is included in this list as a lost film.
  • "Incomplete" films are not included here. These comprise cases where a full reel or more survives but not the whole set of reels.
  • Our searchable database consists of approximately 11,000 titles, the 7200+ in this list of "lost" titles as well as the 3800 or so titles surviving as incomplete or complete. The full database may be searched at:
