For those who will climb it, there is a ladder leading from the depths to the heights—from the sewer to the stars——the ladder of Courage.

In the slums of Paris—under a street known as The Hole in the Sock——

"Look, Chico!"

"That's Monsieur Gobin, the street-washer."

"That's what I should be, Rat——a street-washer! Up there in the sunshine—among people——"

"After all, you know, I'm a very remarkable fellow!"

"Stop bleating about stolen goods—take this and bring me some absinthe!"

"You've come to the wrong place to spout religion!"

"I bring good news, my child. After all these years your aunt and uncle have returned from the South Seas—"

"—He is rich. They want to take you and your sister home."

"Dear Father Chevillon, you have given me new hope. We will be ready tomorrow."

"My dear Colonel Brissac, I am astonished to find my nieces in such a neighborhood!"

"How good you smell—of sandalwood——and fresh linen—"

"—You smell of home!"

"Tell me—have you kept yourselves clean and decent?"

"Oh, yes, Uncle! And you don't know how hard it's been—in a place like this!"

"I want the truth—from you, Diane!"

"—If you and Nana haven't been good girls, I don't want you in my home!"

"Now we can discuss this more calmly."

"Will you promise not to abuse this girl any more?"

"If I catch you at it again, I'll cut out your gizzard and fry it!"

"You saved her life, Chico."

"It wasn't worth saving, Papa Boul. A creature like that is better off dead."

"Don't lie there like a dead fish and spoil our party!"

"The trouble with you is you won't fight. You're afraid!"

"Me! I'm not afraid of anything! That's why I'm a very remarkable fellow!"

"You believe in God, in a Bon Dieu who watches over us—"

"Tell me, then! Did He make this girl to be beaten and strangled in the gutter?"

"Did the Bon Dieu make me?"

"Well—everybody makes mistakes sometimes."

"Religion—huh! I've been all through that. I gave God a fair test—twice."

"First I chose the finest church in Paris—spent five francs for candles—"

"—I prayed God to take me out of the sewer and make me a street-washer. Did He do it?"

"Then I gave him another chance—five francs more—"

"I prayed for a good wife with yellow hair."

"Bah! The only thing the Bon Dieu throws in my way is a creature like that!"

"That makes ten francs totally wasted."

"That's why I'm an atheist—God owes me ten francs!"

"I don't believe you're as bad as you think, my son."

"This is an appointment as street-washer. It is yours, Chico, and the debt is somewhat paid."

"And now I am going to ask you to keep these—"

"Religious medals?"

"Don't scorn them, Citizen Street-Washer—they may help you some day. Who knows?"

"Welcome, Comrade!"

"I thank you, Comrade."

ORDER
OF GENERAL MOBILIZATION


By decree of the President of the Republic mobilization of the armies of land and sea is ordered, also requisition of animals, carriages and harness necessary for the completion of these armies.

The first day of mobilization is AUGUST 27 1916


Every Frenchman subject to military service must under penalty of being punished to the fullest extent of the Law, obey the prescription of the PAMPHLET OF MOBILIZATION (colored pages placed in this booklet).

Included in the present order are ALL THE MEN not at present under the Flags and belonging:

1st to the ARMY of the LAND including COLONIAL TROOPS and the men of the AUXILIARY SERVICES.

2nd to the ARMY of the SEA including the enrolled SEAMEN and the MARINE GUNNERS.


The Civil and Military Authorities are responsible for the execution of the present decree.
