I looked upon her marble face,
Upon her lips I pressed a prayer.
For me, ah, not for you, the grace,
You were not there, You were not there.
I see the stars shine cold and red,
I look into the unbounded air;
Yet this was all their shining said:
You were not there, you were not there.
So, oftentimes when it has happed
That those who loved are torn apart;
When the tense silver cord has snapped
That held us loving, heart to heart.
We cry: Oh dear one, where art thou?
In all God’s universe of space,
Shall not the Love eternal show
To you and me some trysting place?
