James, Martin L. (1829–1907)
Martin L. James, general practitioner, tending to specialize at an early date in diseases of the chest and the heart, and remembered for his original investigations in the diagnostic sign of heart clots was born in Coochland County, Virginia, August 11, 1829. He was the son of Martin James and Elizabeth Thompson. His education was had at Richmond College, the University of Virginia and, in medicine, at Jefferson Medical College, where he graduated in 1852. He practised in his native county, but moved to Richmond in 1867. He lectured on the practice of medicine in the Medical College of Virginia.
He married Julia, daughter of William T. Jesse, of Epping Forest, Lancaster County, Virginia, in 1865.
He died January 13, 1907.
