Ampel, f., ‘lamp,’ from MidHG. ampel (also ampulle), OHG. ampulla, f., ‘lamp,’ also ‘vessel.’ Borrowed in OHG. from Lat. ampulla, ‘flask, vessel,’ whence also AS. ampelle, OIc. ample, ‘vessel’ (LG. pulle, ‘bottle’).
