Ahorn, masculine. ‘maple,’ from the equivalent Middle High German and Old High German âhorn, masculine, the â of which is inferred from the Swiss dialectic; compare Dutch ahorn. It is primitively allied to Latin ăcer, neuter, ‘maple' (Greek ἄκαστος) and Greek ἀκαταλίς ‘juniper berry.’ The German word, at all events, cannot be regarded as borrowed from Latin.
