Stange, feminine, ‘pole, stake, curb-bit,’ from the equivalent Middle High German stange, Old High German stanga, feminine; corresponding to Dutch and English stang, Old Icelandic stǫng, feminine, ‘pole.’ From the Teutonic cognates is derived the Romance class of Italian stanga, ‘pole.’ Teutonic stangô is usually connected with the Teutonic root sting (see stechen), preserved in English to sting.
