sammeln, verb, ‘to collect, gather,’ from the equivalent Middle High German samelen, properly with a n- suffix, samenen, Old High German samanôn; corresponding to Old Saxon samnôn, Dutch zamelen, Anglo-Saxon samnian, Old Icelandic samna, ‘to collect’; a derivative of the Old German adverb saman.
