Compare the rare Middle High German starren, ‘to become fixed,’ allied to the Teutonic root ster, star, with which the cognates of Star and Stärke are connected. With these compare Sanscrit sthira, ‘firm, strong,’ Greek στερεός, ‘hard.’ —
