stoßen, verb, ‘to push, thrust,’ from the e Middle High German stôȥen, Old High German stôȥan, strong verb, corresponding to Gothic stautan, Old Saxon stôtan, Dutch stooten. The common Teutonic strong verbal root staut corresponds in non-Teutonic to an Aryan root tud, by gradation taud, which appears in Latin tundo, ‘to beat, bruise, stun’ (Latin tudes, ‘hammer’), and the Sanscrit root tud, ‘to push, thrust’; for Teutonic st, equivalent to Aryan t, compare Stier and Storch.
