zögern, verb, ‘to linger, loiter, defer,’ Modern High German only, a derivative of Middle High German zogen, Old High German zogôn, ‘to tug, draw, go, defer, retard.’ An intensive form of ziehen; compare Old Icelandic toga, English to tug.
