Auster, f., ‘oyster,’ ModHG. only, from earlier ModHG. ûster, from Du. oester, which, with the equiv. AS. ôstre, E. oyster, Fr. huitre, Ital. ostrica, is based upon Lat. ostrea, ostreum, Gr. ὄστρεον, ‘oyster, mussel.’
