Fasan, m., ‘pheasant,’ from the equiv. MidHG. and OHG. fasân, fasant, m.; the latter is derived from Lat. Gr. fasianus (φασιανός, ‘a bird from the Phasis in Colchis’), ‘pheasant,’ whence also Ital. fagiano, Fr. faisan.
