Kaue, f., ‘coop, cage, pen,’ from MidHG. kouwe (köwe), f., ‘miner's hut or shed over a shaft’ (OHG. *kouwa, Goth. *kaujô, are wanting); from Lat. cavea (intermediate form cauja?), ‘cavity.’ See also Käfig.
