Lamprete, ‘lamprey,’ from MidHG. lamprête, also corrupted into lemfride, lantfride, &c. OHG. (lamprêta, formed from Lat. lamprêda (whence Fr. lamproie, E. lamprey), with the variant lampetra, lit. ‘stone-licker.’
