Makrele, f., ‘mackerel,’ from late MidHG. makrêle, f.; borrowed from the equiv. Du. makreel (comp. E. mackerel), which is of Rom. origin; MidLat. macarellus, maquerellus, OFr. maguerel, ModFr. maquereau.
