Pokal, m., ‘drinking cup,’ first occurs in ModHG. from Ital. boccale (Fr. bocal), ‘beaker, mug,’ which with its Rom. cognates is usually traced back to Gr. βαυκάλἰον, ‘vessel’; comp. Becher.
