Röhre, f., ‘tube, pipe, flue,’ from MidHG. rœre, OHG. rôra, rôrra, from an earlier rôrea, f., ‘reed stalk, hollow stalk, reed’; a derivative of Rehr, OHG. rôr (Goth. *rauzjô, f., is wanting); hence Röhre is lit. ‘the reed-shaped.’
