Ritter, n., ‘chevalier, knight,’ from MidHG. ritter, riter, m., ‘horseman, knight’ (also rîtœre); the form with tt is due to a confusion with OHG. ritto, ‘horseman’ (from ridjo). See reiten and Reuter.
