Sparren, m., ‘spar, raster,’ from MidHG. sparre, OHG. sparro, m., ‘pole, beam’; corresponding to Du. and E. spar, OIc. sparre, ‘beam.’ There are no cognate terms in the non-Teut. languages. See sperren.
