Weibel, m., ‘sergeant, apparitor,’ from the equiv. MidHG. weibel, OHG. weibil, m.; allied to MidHG. weiben, ‘to move to and fro.’ The variant Webel (in Feldwebel) is derived from LG. or East MidG.
