Zofe, f., ‘maid, wanting-woman,’ ModHG. only, formed from MidHG. zâfen (zôfen), ‘to draw, arrange suitably, nurse, adorn’; zâfe, f., ‘ornament’; hence Zofe, lit. ‘adorning maid.’
