bägern, ‘to torment, plague,’ prob. allied to OHG. bâgan, MidHG. bâgen, str. vb., ‘to contend, quarrel.’ Akin to Ir. bágim, ‘I contend,’ bág, ‘combat’; hence the Aryan root is bhêgh, bhôgh.
