gäten, jäten, vb., ‘to weed,’ from the equiv. MidHG. jëten, gëten, OHG. jëtan, gëtan; akin to OHG. jetto, m., ‘weed, darnel.’ Perhaps Gr. ζητέω, ‘I seek,’ is allied, if the Aryan root is yē̆t.
