gellen, vb., ‘to yell,’ from MidHG. gëllen, OHG. gëllan, str. vb., ‘to sound loud, cry’; corresponding to Du. gillen, AS. gillan, OIc. gjalla, ‘to resound’; allied to the Teut. root gel, gal, ‘to resound.’ Comp. Nachtigall.
