zwirnen, vb., ‘to twist, twine, throw (silk),’ a denominative, from MidHG. zwirnen, OHG. zwirnén, -nôn, ‘to twist a double thread, twine’; comp. Du. tweernen, E. to twine, and the equiv. Dan. tvinde.
