NEÉ, Isidore Charles Sigismond (nay), West Indian botanist, b. in St. Martin, W. I., in 1784; d. in Paris, France, in 1837. He received his education in New Orleans, returned in 1808 to the West Indies, and in the spring of 1810 went to South America. After visiting Guiana and the important cities of Brazil, he sailed for Lima, explored the Andes, and ascended the volcanoes Pichincha and Chimborazo. In 1814 he went to Mexico, where he sojourned several years, devoting his time to researches in libraries. He then settled in France and published “Flora Mexicana, seu genera et species plantarum quæ in Mexico Crescent” (2 vols., Paris, 1827); “Les volcans des Andes de l'Equateur; une ascension du Pichincha et du Chimborazo” (1829); “Mémoire sur les hiéroglyphes Mexicains” (1830); and “Études sur l'analogie de l'écriture cunique et des hiéroglyphes Egyptiens et Mexicains” (1832).
