John Campbell Gibson
(1849–1919)

Member of the English Presbyterian Mission in China, where he started to work in 1874 in Swatow (Shantou). His Duff lectures of 1898, published as Mission Problems and Mission Methods in South China (1901), detail his experience of evangelism and the building up of a Chinese church. A joint chairman of the 1907 Shanghai Centenary Missionary Conference and chairman of the Commission on The Church in the Mission Field, reporting to the 1910 Edinburgh World Missionary Conference, he stressed the right of the Chinese church to unity and independence from foreign control. The Presbyterian Church of England elected him its moderator in 1910. In 1919 he was called to preside over the first General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in China.
