Joseph William Winthrop Spencer
(1851–1921)

Pioneer Canadian geomorphologist, known for his studies of glacial, proglacial lakes, and preglacial drainage systems in the Great Lakes. He taught at Hamilton Collegiate Institute (1877-1880), King's College, Nova Scotia (1880-1882), University of Missouri (1882-1888; he was professor and director of the Museum of Natural History) and University of Georgia (1888-1893; he was also appointed to the State Geological Survey). After this he became a consultant geologist in Washington, D.C. , but returned to Canada shortly before his death in 1921.
