pseudonymous poet who published under a number of assumed names, including Pierce Shafton (cf. Piercie Shafton, a character in Walter Scott's The Monastery). The London Magazine introduced one of the poet's poems by saying "Eleven of our Editors protest that the following Stanzas are 'from the elegant pen of the greatest lyrist of the day;' but there is one stubborn soul on the jury that will hold out"
