(1884–1975)

American financier and government official; Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1941 to 1944; Under Secretary from 1944 to 1945. As a member of the Interim Committee, appointed to advise President Harry S. Truman on the use of the atomic bomb; wrote a short memorandum to Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson urging that Japan be given a warning before the use of the atomic bomb on a Japanese city.
