  • Numerous letters to the editor of The Times from 1889-1909 (search "Alfred Marks" and "Adelaide-road") on matters of banks and van Eyck

Alfred Marks

[edit]

It seems to me that bank manager and the author of Tyburn Tree are different persons. Here are my steps:
1) Blurb on Tyburn Tree refers to other works of Mr. Marks, specifically on Van Eyck;
2) Pieces on Van Eyck appeared in Athenaeum and Transactions of Royal Literature Society;
3) A bit earlier there are pieces on da Vinci by Mr. Marks also in Athenaeum and Transactions of Royal Literature Society
4) In 'The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci Volume 2 Translated by Jean Paul Richter 1888", author of the above articles is referred to as "Mr. Alfred Marks, of Long Ditton"
5) I am only able to find Alfred Pally Marks of Long Ditton, very likely the son of Mr. Marks in question.
6) If you can find anything further about Mr. Marks please let me know. I am interested in his book "Death of Sir Edmund Godfrey". Cheers, Captain Nemo (talk) 02:54, 15 August 2015 (UTC).Reply

@Captain Nemo: Quite possibly. It was a bit of a last minute thing yesterday, and the refs that I had were a little confused. It is on my revisit list for today, and it is why I didn't hack into WD. Once I have resolved the issue around these bot edits not bot editing, I will be able to get back to it. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:40, 15 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Cheers, Captain Nemo (talk) 04:39, 15 August 2015 (UTC).Reply
@Captain Nemo: FOREST AND FRIGGING TREES! Hoppus Marks is citing her own husband's works. This is what happens when things happen at the last moment, and one drops notes for later. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:12, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Captain Nemo: would appear to be same person — billinghurst sDrewth 13:57, 16 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Billinghurst: Great data mining. Yep, seems to be the same person, very literate for a bank manager. VIAF cluster is very confused, conflates many different people. Captain Nemo (talk) 02:11, 17 August 2015 (UTC).Reply
@Captain Nemo: I think that the marriage (his second), how that came about with MAMH, and his introduction to literature would be an interesting story in itself [I think that his father was a coachbuilder, though I didn't dig too far].
I am not sure that any of the authority control data is for this person, and have no comfort level with it. He is one of those obscure authors lost in time, especially where a common name exists AND the AC data is unreliable, and I think that they know it. FWIW re his work that you mentioned, seems quirky enough for my grade of editing, at the same time, it might make a really good PotM for January when we do quirky works. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:55, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
