I'm moving stuff around, no need for five floor statements to be hidden in sublinks, etc. Sherurcij Collaboration of the Week: Author:John McCain and Author:Barack Obama 20:47, 10 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Address to a Joint Session of Congress

[edit]
Obama's February 24th speech before Congress is not officially considered a "State of the Union" address, but neither were the first addresses of Bush the First, Clinton, or Bush the Second, and those speeches are catalogued as George Herbert Walker Bush's First State of the Union Address, Bill Clinton's First State of the Union Address, and George W. Bush's First State of the Union Address. For the sake of consistency, should Obama's congressional address not be similarly listed as his first State of the Union address? — Tonyfuchs, 23:40, 24 February 2008
No, they should all be fixed, imo. -- Kendrick7 (talk) 08:46, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Organization

[edit]

I realize this is (presumably) still a work in progress, but the current organization (largely unchanged for at least a year) is very confusing.

On the main author page, important presidential addresses (inaugural addresses, addresses to Congress) are followed by DNC speeches (none of which exist here, but that's beside the point), then books, then presidential debates, then speeches as a state senator, etc... and then down at the bottom, more presidential stuff. Presumably, this organization is meant to highlight the most important stuff first, but on first glance, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it, so it actually makes it harder to find stuff, IMO. Seems to me, a (mostly) strictly chronological ordering of the sections would be a lot more user-friendly (i.e., put all the presidential stuff at the bottom, after the state senator, U.S. senator and presidential candidate stuff). Most people will see the table of contents first, anyway, so they can use that to jump to the presidential stuff if they want.

Actually, before you even get to the list of individual works, there's a short list of subpages (which are not identified as such in any way) containing special kinds of works (podcasts, letters, etc.). This contributes to the overall confusing nature of the page. Perhaps these links should be moved to a "sidebar"?

And finally, speaking of the subpages, why should we have a separate "Presidential works" subpage collecting press conferences, town-hall meetings, and interviews? Not only is the title not very descriptive, the grouping of these things together seems questionable. Most of the other subpages (e.g., for executive orders and weekly addresses) seem logical enough, so wouldn't it make more sense to create separate Author:Barack Obama/Press conferences, Author:Barack Obama/Town-hall meetings, and Author:Barack Obama/Interviews subpages?

Oh, and now I see some other subpages (e.g., "Official statements") are only linked to from this "Presidential works" subpage and not from the main author page! Ugh... - dcljr (talk) 10:28, 31 July 2013

2014 speeches

[edit]

Looks like there isn't much on this page from 2009 onwards.

I added a subsection for 2014 speeches.

Notifying proposed deletions

[edit]

I brought up the works of president-elect Obama here: wikisource:Proposed deletions#John McCain Concession Speech and works of president-elect Obama

I do not think these works are compatible with Wikisource's copyright policy. -Pete (talk) 23:03, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
