Background

[edit]

The DNB27 article on w:Elizabeth Garrett Anderson says in its sources section at the end "private information and letters; personal knowledge". Checking that out, I have found that Fanny's father was the Rev. Frederick Alfred Johnson, who married in 1859 [1] Ellen Garrett. Ellen was a daughter of Richard Garrett III, a brother of Newson Garrett the father of Elizabeth Garrett. So it works out that Fanny's mother was first cousin to Elizabeth Garrett Anderson.

A newspaper reference from 1944 states that Fanny, Emeritus Lecturer at Bedford College, was daughter of the Rev. F. A. Johnson, rector of Stratford St Andrew in Suffolk, as Frederick Alfred Johnson was from 1859. [2] gives London degrees Johnson, Fanny C.: B.A.* 98: M.A. 03. [3] gives Miss F. C. Johnson M.A.Lond. appointed at Bedford College Lecturer in French, around 1909.

A Beccles & Bungay newspaper extract from 1944:[4]

DEATH of Miss Fanny C Johnson, MA, Lecturer Emeritus at Bedford College, University of London. She spent her younger days in the borough, which she frequently visited. She was the sister of Miss EM Johnson, of Stratford Cottage, Old Market. She was educated at Bedford College from 1894 and returned there, as lecturer in 1909, from 1918-1933 she was Head of the Department of French Language and Medieval Literature.

I believe the date of birth is 1868. based on FreeBDM:

:Births Sep 1868 JOHNSON Fanny Cecilia Plomesgate

Plomesgate being in Suffolk. Birth 1868 would make her apparent retirement in 1933 to be at age around 65. Charles Matthews (talk) 18:56, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
