I suspect that https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/175662100/john-stall-patterson is who we are after, it seems that a John was born to Robert Patterson and Anna Stahl in roughly this time frame (https://www.google.com/books/edition/Biographies_and_Portraits_of_the_Progres/BEL_J9bJSDQC). However 38 is a little old for a private in the civil war and these books are in his 60s. That would have b. 1822 MD d. 1894 Ohio. MarkLSteadman (talk) 15:52, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
