S. H. C. D., June 10, 1908. “The Owl,” official magazine of the “Wing family of America, Incorporated,” says that from researches made in London and this country, the name of Hoxie is a very old one, variously spelled Hocksley, Hawksie, Hawkseye, etc. Authentic record of the name in London, 1329. Name also in “Domesday Book,” compiled about 1080, A. D.
The querist does not give dates for the Gideon Hoxie and wife Grace (—?) inquired for. Gideon (2) Hoxie (Lodowick 1), born Feb. 23 or 25, 1673, married Grace Gifford, born Aug. 17, 1671, daughter of John (2) and Elishua or Elizabeth (Crowell, daughter of John Crowell, Gifford (William 1 Gifford of Sandwich). Gideon and Grace (Gifford) Hoxie's children are given as: Mary, born April 1, 1696; Content, born Sept. 13, 1697; Bashua, born Oct. 14, 1698; Elizabeth, born May 10, 1700; Joseph, born May 1, 1702; Simeon, born May 31, 1704; Ann, born May 5, 1706, married, 8mo., 9~ 1728, Stephen Wing; Gideon, born Sept. 5, 1707; Keziah, born July 13, 1710; Lodowick, born May 27, 1712; Grace, born June 28, 1714.

[edit]*8380. 4. Baldwin. “Mack,” March 16, 1908. The correspondent says that in a “Return of marriages performed at Monson in the County of Hampshire from the year 1782 to 1785 by Jesse Ives, Clerk,” he finds the marriage “December 11, 1783, Joshua Blodget of Randolph to Increase Childs of Monson.” That is a record long sought for in town records of Monson and neighboring towns, but without success. Upon seeing “Mack's” statement, I thought to have it verified from the Monson Church records, as I knew that Re~gational Church at Monson at the time specified. I accordingly wrote to the present pastor of the church for a transcript of the record, but in answer he says “he can find no record of it” and “we have in our church books no evidence” of it. Under these circumstances may I ask “Mack” where the return may be found and consulted? I do not want to question the correctness of his statement, for it is in harmony with the Randolph, Vt., record, and it is more complete. I want to be able, however, to refer to authorities quoted. It may be that other marriages by Mr. Ives are hidden in this list, which are not recorded elsewhere. It it has not been done already, the whole list should be published. Where can a searcher find the document?

*9152. 1. Hamilton. “Mack,” May 25, 1908. Daniel (1) Hamilton died in Chatham, Mass., Dec. 8, 1738, in his sixty-ninth year. Grace, daughter of Daniel (1) and Mary, was born Aug. 3 and died Aug. 20, 1694. Thomas, son of Daniel (1) and Mary Hamilton, was born in Orleans, Mass., Sept. 1, 1695, and died in Chatham, Mass., May 1, 1772, in his seventy-seventh year. Children of Thomas and Rebecca born in Chatham were: Rebecca, born Nov. 20, 1720; Nathaniel, born Aug. 23, 1722; Grace, born July 24, 1724, died April 29, 1753, Lydia, born April 24, 1726, Jane, born April 19, 1728; Zeruiah, born April 27, 1731; Deliah born June 28, 1734; Thomas, born Sept. 14, 1739. Hannah, daughter of Thomas and Rebecca, died in Chatham, Oct. 19, 1736, in her eighteenth year. The Hamilton data sent me by the town clerk of Chatham proves that Thomas, son of Daniel (1), died in Chatham in 1772.
In regard to James Hamilton of Blandford, I will quote from a letter received from Rev. S. L. Wood, who is collecting material for a history of Blandford, Mass. Mr. Wood writes: “Armour, Hugh, John, James and Robert Hamilton or Hambleton, as it is often spelled, were all here, and each obtained settlement lots on the settlement of this town. The deeds all bear date of 1737, though the town was settled two years earlier. The clear title was not given in any case to home lots until 1737. If you care for it, I can furnish you with an original photograph of the topographical map of the town and can indicate the exact location of each of them, with the possible exception of Robert.” Janet, daughter of Mrs. Mary Hamilton, later of Northampton, was married in Pelham in 1753. This led me to think that perhaps she was the daughter of James Hamilton of Blandford and that her father removed to Pelham and died there. Miss Salome Hamilton wrote me that she had a copy of the inscription on the tombstone of Rebecca, widow of James (1) Hamilton, who died in Pelham in 1759 and was laid beside her husband in Worcester.

*9628. 9. La Groves, Black, Winter. “Mona,” May 20, 1908. The case is settled, and by ample proof. I am much indebted to “Mona” for valuable assistance, as undoubtedly many others are who are interested in this family.
Have seen the name (Sallows) spelled so many ways that I ask “Mona's” opinion as to the correct form then and what form is now used by descendants. Do you take “Solart” to be the same name?

*9838. 3. Gates, Hildreth. G. A. G. L., May 20, 1908. The correspondent says Asa Farnsworth, son of Jonathan, Jr., and Rachel (Cutting) Farnsworth. I have the mother's name Rachel Nutting (not Cutting) and have never been able to find her ancestry. Can G. A. G. L. give the parentage of Rachel (Cutting) Farnsworth?

*9885.]] 5. Eveleth, Starkweather. “Mack,” May 25, 1908. “Mack” says that William Whittredge married, second, 1663, Widow Susanna Colby. I think she was the widow of Anthony Colby, and would be glad if “Mack” or any other interested ~ of the Transcript would give me Susanna Colby's family name, and date of her death.

*9960. 1. Haraden. L. H. B., May 25, 1908. I find the following in Babson's “History of Gloucester”: “Jonathan Haraden, without doubt a descendant of Edward (1), was born in Gloucester in 1744; removed early in life to Salem and went to sea. In the Revolutionary War he was lieutenant of the Tyrannicide, and afterwards commander of a privateer. He was engaged with the enemy in seven actions and evinced great bravery on all occasions. He died in November, 1803.” And in “Babson's Notes and Additions”: “Of the exploits of Captain Jonathan Haraden an account may be found in Hunt's ‘Merchant's Magazine’ for 1859.” My interest in the Haraden family ceases with the second generation, but if it would be of any use to you I can give the names of the children of Edward (1) with dates and some of his grandchildren.

*9966. 2. White, Colwell. D. B. E., May 25, 1908. Daniel Abbott, son of emigrant Daniel, married, Dec. 25, 1678, Margaret, widow of Thomas Walling. “Oct. 1, 1665, he received a deed of a five-acre house lot in Providence from Robert Williams of Newport, formerly of Providence, who declares that Daniel Abbott was formerly his servant and that the house lot was one which did ~ the original belong to Daniel Abbott, senior, father to above said Daniel, it being by him sold to Mr. Williams.” For further details about this Abbott family, see Arnold's “Rhode Island Families,” and especially Major Abbott's “Genealogy of George Abbott ~ Rowley, and data on other Abbott families.

*9980. 7. Low. ~ S. D., June 1, 1908. John (5) Low had son John (6) born in Ipswich May 20, 1714 ~ “He removed to Lyman, Me., and died there.”
My notes, taken mainly from Beverly Records, differ from the above quotation, and in order to be corrected, if wrong, I offer the following:
John Low, born at Hamilton, Mass., in 1746. Removed to Bever~ before the Revolutionary War and engaged in the cabinet-making business. He married, first, Martha, daughter of Nathaniel and Martha (Bal~) Raymond, May 14, 1767. She was born Feb. 13, 1745.
He was a sergeant in Captain Larkin Thorndike's Company, which marched for Lexington, April 19, 1775, and reached Arlington ~ time to be engaged with the Brit~ my~ He commanded the Be~y company which left Beverly for Cambridge, May 25, 1775, and was present at the battle of Bunker Hill; the~ to New York. After his service in the ~ay expired, he returned to Beverly, and, ~ a time, kept a p~ h~ near the Ferry. Subsequently, he removed to Lyman, Me., where he died in 1827. His first wife, “Martha, married John Low, Esq. (of) Lyman, died Sept. 26, 1805, a ~ (S~d Church Records.) Her age agrees with the ~ of her birth, 1745 as above.
“John Low, Esq., of Lyman, and Sally Herr~ck were married Feb. 25, 1806 ~ These few items are open to correction, relating to the John Low, who died at Lyman, Me. Martha (Raymond) Low had a sister Hannah who married John Porter, and removed to Lyman, Me.

Eleazer Houghton of Lancaster was a son of Robert (John 1) and Esther ~ His wife, Elizabeth, was a daughter of William and Ruth (Whitcomb) Divoll, and a granddaughter of Ensign John and Hannah (White) Divoll. *9988. 7. Crowell, Lewis, Paine. W. L. G., June 1, 1908. Isaac (4) Crowell (Isaac 3, Thomas 2, Yelverton 1), born Yarmouth, Dec. 15, 1715, married, Jan. 19, 1743-4, Hannah Paln~ of Truro, who died March 10, 1790. Children: David, Aug. 22, 1745; married, Oct. 18, 1778, Margaret Whelden; Isaac, March 4, 1746-7 married, Nov. 27, 1784, Susannah Blish of Barnstable, Hannah, Nov. 28, 1748, died young; Phebe, January, 1751-2, married, July 6, 1775, David Lewes of Barnstable, and died March 5, 1827; Hannah, Nov. 5, 1753; Dorcas, Nov. 12, 1755; married, March 27, 1777, Mathias Gorham; Susannah, Dec. 29, 1757.
The above record was given some years since by a descendant of Yelverton Crowell, since deceased, but I think the marriage of Phebe is an error, and that the wife of David Lewes was the daughter of Edward (5) Crowell, by his wife Betsey Baker, as stated in Crowell Genealogy. Benjamin Lewes, his elder brother, married, Dec. 3, 1767, Sarah Crowell; and Elnathan Lewes a younger brother, married, April 26, 1773, Thankful Crowell—three brothers married three sisters. Barnstable Probate Records will perhaps settle the parentage of Phebe Crowell.
According to Otis's “Barnstable Families” David Lewes had by wife, Phebe ~ Susa, July 24, 1776; Phebe, July 5, 1778; David, May 22, 1781; Elizabeth, April 19, 1783; Temperance, June 2, 1789; Sally, Oct. 13, 1795; Richard, Aug. 15, 1798. He married, second, Temperance Lewes, daughter of Lemuel Lewes, had five other children, and removed to Kennebec.
Jesse Lewes (same authority), born March 11, 1705, married, first, March 8, 1731-32, Naomi Lewes, and, second, Feb. 25, 1735-36, Mercy Crosby of Harwich, and had: Mary, Dec. 23, 1736; Anner, March 13, 1738; Naomi, Jan. 12, 1740; Thomas, baptized July 31, 1743; David, baptized July 20, 1746, and Sarah, baptized June 18, 1749.
Whether Phebe was the daughter of Isaac or Edward Crowell, she was not the youngest daughter, as stated by tradition, as in either case she would have had three younger sisters.

*9990. 1. Daboll. G. D. S., June 3, 1908. Samuel Dibble went from Easthampton, Long Island, to Groton, Conn., in 1718, and had sons Nathan and John. The name gradually changed to Daboll. Nathan was the father of Nathan, born 1750, and John was the father of John born 1751.

*9991. 1. Ingersoll, Foster. L. D. A. P., June 3, 1908. John, of John and Sarah, baptized Aug. 9, 1730; Sarah, of John and Sarah, baptized Aug. 12, 1732; Thomas of John and Sarah, baptized Dec. 22, 1734. No further record of them in Beverly.
Richard Ingersoll of Salem and Ruth Dodge married at Salem. April 28, 1698. They had: Ruth, born Dec. 24, 1698; Sarah, baptized Aug. 30, 1702, probably married Daniel Cressy of Boston, Oct. 26, 1720; about 1740 removed to Connecticut. He was baptized July 17, 1698, son of John and Sarah (Gaines of Ipswich) Cressy. Richard, son of widow Ruth, baptized Oct. 5, 1712. Also a son John, same date.
Children of William and Serena (Sargent) Ingersoll: Mary E., born Feb. 21, 1836; Serena, born Oct. 19, 1840, probably died young; Daniel S. and Serena A., baptized June 19, 1842; also a son John. Hon. Nathaniel Hooper of Marblehead married Sally Ingersoll, Nov. 20, 1821.
Deaths—Catharine S., daughter of Captain William and Serena, April 14, 1844, aged one year; Mary E., Oct. 18, 1838, aged one year nine months; also a child, Oct. 20, 1838, aged three years; Nancy, daughter of Captain Samuel and Eleanor, Aug. 29, 1826, aged forty-three years; Samuel B. (Rev.) of Captain Samuel and Eleanor, born Oct. 13, 1785, ordained at Shrewsbury, June 14, 1820, died Nov. 15, 1820. Captain Samuel died of inflammation of the bladder. Oct. 9, 1807, aged sixty-one years; Eleanor, widow of Captain Samuel, died of fever, Nov. 10, 1819, aged sixty-five years.
The foregoing may not be helpful to L. D. A. P., but it may be that some other persons will find something of interest in it: hence the offer.

*9993. 6. Stearns. T. E. P., June 3, 1908. The “Stearns Genealogy” says: “Isaac Stearns or Sternes, born in England, married, 1622, Mary Barker, daughter of John and Margaret Barker of Stoke, Nayland, Suffolk, England. This is proved correct by an entry in Thomas Lechford's notebook.”

Isaac Stearns married, 1622, in England, Mary Barker, daughter of John and Margaret Barker of Stoke, Nayland County, Suffolk, England. Wife Mary died April 2, 1677. I regret that I failed to record my authority for this statement, but as evidence of its correctness I refer to vol. xi., New England Historical and Genealogical Register, which states “Isaac Stearns of Watertown, late of Stoke, Nayland County, Suffolk, and wife Mary daughter of John Barker of the same, appoint Thomas Gilson of Sudbury, County Suffolk, to collect five pounds of one Munnings, of Gaynes Colne County Essex, due on a bond given by Munnings before his marriage to Margaret Barker, mother of said Mary.”
