"A favourite German song, commencing 'Freut euch des Lebens,' the author of which is Martin Usteri of Zurich; first published in the 'Göttinger Musenalmanach' for 1796 without the author's name. The music was written in 1793 by Hans Georg Nägeli." —"Life let us cherish," in A Dictionary of Music and Musicians, (ed.) by George Grove, London: MacMillan & Co., Ltd. (1900)
Nägeli's melody became popular in its own right, and is often called Butterfly Waltz.
